The ruined Church of St Birgitta

The church named after St. Birgitta gathered the people of Vihti to hear the word of God for about 300 years.

The parish priest A. J. Hipping tells in his history of the parish published in 1845:

"The church was built in a simple Gothic style. The ceiling was high, but the church was small. There were only five windows, and they were small and low."

He goes on to say that in 1670 the church was painted with "beautiful biblical images, according to the custom of the time". A new wooden belfry was built on the east side of the church in 1682. The church was built on loose soil, and as a result the walls were constantly cracked, resulting in costly repairs. In 1656, the western end of the church, on the lake side, was largely rebuilt. This end stood for over 200 years, until it collapsed in an autumn storm in 1869.

St Birgitta Church ruins is located in Vihti, Kirkkoniemi, where a few events are held in the summer. Marriage ceremonies, for example, can be arranged there.
