Nummela Airport

Nummela Airport (EFNU) is one of the busiest recreational aviation airports in Finland. The airport is situated in a magnificent location on a ridge, in the middle of Nummela, close to large bodies of water. There is a hotel on the edge of the airfield and the area around the airfield is an active recreational area. In the winter, cross-country skiing trails and a cross-country ski runway replace the landing strips.

The airport is managed by the Nummela Airport Association. The airport offers gliding, powered flight, powered gliding and ultralight flight activities, training, glider towing, drone and drone operations. The airport and its activities are being actively developed. Among other things, Nummela Airport is the first airport in the world with automatic access control.

Airport for travellers and amateurs

Aircraft can be observed from the grass strip surrounding the airfield. The Nummelanharju lookout point, with good views of Hiidenvesi, is also located along the track. Other good places for spotting aircraft are the Air Hotel parking lot (Lentokentäntie 5) and the Nummelanharju ski resort, the so-called Tarmonmaja (Hiidenvedentie 30).

You can get to know gliders and gliding in Nummela through courses organised by Cumulus ry, for example an introductory or basic course, or a demonstration flight. Booking and enquiring about courses and demonstration flights can be done via the Cumulus website.

History and today

The airport was established in 1940 and was used as an air squadron base during the Second World War. A memorial to the military pilots who died in a plane crash in 1941 is also located on the site. On the other side of the airfield, in front of the Air Hotel, is the Total Energy memorial, which honours the memory of those who took their last flight from Vihti Nummela Airport. The memorial was designed and built by Veijo Aulio in 2011.

Currently, the airport has grown considerably since the closure of Malmi Airport. The airport has two new hangars and a third under construction. In addition, the airport has an access control system, runway lights and an electric charging station. There is also a public weather station.
